Analysis and Design of Direct Burial Sections of San Diego County Water Authority's Pipeline 4 Extension

by Jey K. Jeyapalan,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Pipeline Infrastructure II

Abstract:

The pipeline 4 extension is one of the San Diego County Water Authority's Phase I projects that will run for about 13 miles. Majority of this new pipeline will be 96 inch in steel and some in 108 inch. Typical cover depths are in the range of 7 to 22 feet with water pressure of 100 to 275 psi. The author was contracted by the principal civil engineering design firm to develop designs. This pipeline is under construction and the author will present the details of the analyses which were performed to obtain the design steel plate thickness. The work resulted in substantial savings to the agency on construction costs on this project and the author will provide some benefits of using methods other than conventional standards for welded steel pipe design. Those design engineers involved in water transmission projects will find this paper quite useful.
