Abstract:

This paper describes developments to date for a fish diversion and bypass system being tested for two Columbia River dams. Because of the concern for the negative impacts of screen systems used to divert young salmon, we have followed an approach that integrates fish behavior and hydraulic design principles. Model and field testing of a fixed bar screen system indicates this system has hydraulic parameters desirable for effective diversion of the fish into the turbine gatewells. Development of a new orifice has demonstrated an efficient option for getting the young salmon out of the gatewells.
