Field-Scale Research at the TVA Columbus Groundwater Research Test Site

Abstract:

TVA has been conducting large-scale field experiments at their Columbus Groundwater Research test site at Columbus Air Force Base since 1983. This work has been performed in cooperation with Mississippi State University, GeoTrans Inc., and others with support from the Electric Power Research Institute and the United States Air Force. The goal of these experiments is to improve groundwater protection, monitoring, and mitigation practices by developing a better understanding of the physical, chemical, and biodegradation processes associated with the movement of contaminants in groundwater. The latest series of experiments were initiated in June 1990 to investigate groundwater processes associated with major constituents of jet fuel and gasoline, as well as utility wastes. Recent results from analysis of data collected from the network of over 300 multi-sampling wells will be presented. Implications for groundwater modeling strategy and future research will be discussed.
