Abstract:

In simulating a dam break flood in a large floodplain, the maximum flood level is sensitive to the off-channel storage volume used in the channel routing. An incorrect estimate of the off-channel storage volume could lead to an over-estimate of the maximum flood stage and an under-estimate of the floodwave travel time at the downstream locations. A separate overland channel routing algorithm was developed to predict more accurately the flood propagation in a large floodplain area.
