Abstract:

In Japan, more than 300,000 vehicles are presently equipped with car navigation systems. Development of these systems had been greatly aided by the completion of a standardized digital road map. Up to 1965, subways and railways were the main modes of urban and interurban transportation, but after the 1970's roads were improved and car ownership sky-rocketed. The congestion of roads has become a difficult problem for everybody, navigation systems help drivers to follow the shortest route to their destination.
