Abstract:

This paper presents the results of tests carried out in the last 3 months of 1992 regarding the Automatic Incident Detection System elaborated in the INAVID project (DRIVE program). This system uses video images as inputs, provided by cameras installed along the motorway. Based on image processing techniques it is also able to detect incidents that occur within the field of cameras linked to the system. the experiment revealed that the system performances meet operational needs. Results obtained with detection time thresholds of 15 seconds in traffic lanes and 1 minute in the emergency lanes are given in the paper.
