Abstract:

Implementation of IVHS technologies must be based on a strategic planning approach. The strategic plan must consider regional and statewide needs and should prompt integration of IVHS systems. This paper will document the process used to develop andIVHS strategic plan for WA state. The plan includes a future vision for IVHS, from which specific strategies are being developed to address specific short, medium, and long range transportation needs within the state. For example, Washington State has adopted policies promoting the implementation of multimodal transportation programs, including HOV systems and employer commute trip reduction plans. The strategic IVHS plan will be structured to assist these programs in a logical sequence over several years. the paper will also identify rhe evaluation process that is being used to assess the effectiveness of the IVHS strategies.
