Abstract:

In Japan, canals for transport have been developed on the coast of urban areas. Recently, it has become evident that those areas are under chaotic conditions due to the decline of the use of canals for transport, relocation of coastal facilities to offshore wharves, relocation of factories to suburbs, and growing number of offices and high storied residential buildings in that the city infrastructure has not been completely fixed. Concerning these points, it is important to revalue and study canals from other angles with regard to their functions.
