Abstract:

This paper discusses the ecology as well as the traditional capture fishery for the transitional phase juvenile shrimp of the genus Penaeus in the Lagos lagoon, Nigeria. The juvenile shrimps were sampled monthly (March 1983 to April 1985), at fifteen stations in the Lagos lagoon. The nursery grounds of the shrimp species are mangrove swamps scattered along the edge of Lagos lagoon. The time spent by the juvenile shrimps in the nursery ground area ranged from 2 to 6 months. Most of the juveniles (74.7% and 89.3% by weight and number respectively) were pink shrimp Penaeus notialis; with carapace length (CL) range from 7 mm to 30 mm.
