Abstract:

There are myriad public and private organizations that share interests in coastal management. Until recently, these organizations had separate agendas and did not work together to promote their common goals. This changed, partly, when organizations represented by the authors cooperated to plan and put on a major coastal conference in 1992. This paper describes the coalition-building that went into this conference, coalitions formed by these separate groups, and other coalitions that could serve as models for improved coastal management.
