Abstract:
Under the Metric conversion Act of 1975, Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, and Executive Order 12770 of 1991 all federal agencies are required to convert to the international metric system of measurement. The Coast and Geodetic Survey (C&GS) has begun the conversion of its suite of National Ocean Service (NOS) nautical charts published in English units to metric units of measurement. The specific technical requirements and policies for the construction of the nautical chart are provided by the C&GS 'Nautical Chart Manual' and the 'Desk Reference Guide,' with additional assistance provided by International Hydrographic organization (IHO) technical reference material. The conversion methodologies examined and undertaken by the C&GS Mapping and Charting Branch have established an acceptable conversion process for the production of new editions of the nautical chart in metric format.
