Abstract:

Contrary to generalized expectations, the shores of Araruama Lagoon turned out to be abundant of examples of morphological changes, primarily due to disregard of basic coastal engineering procedures. The main engineering works which have been identified are: construction of marginal protection, dredging, land reclamation, piers and quays, and sanitary engineering works. The contour of the Lagoon was divided in physiographic units for littoral drift, and sediment transport was computed at for locations using Littoral Drift Roses. Management aspects are discussed.
