Abstract:

During the 25 years that the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has been in existence, there has been an increasing recognition of the contribution of both episodic and long-term beach erosion to property damage/losses during flood events. This paper discusses the relevance of work in progress to better understand episodic beach erosion. The primary aim is to develop appropriate technical guidance for pile embedment, such that foundations will not be undermined during 100-year flooding events.
