High-Speed Rail's Prospects in Canada

by Gabor Matyas, VIA Rail, Montreal, Canada,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: High Speed Ground Transportation Systems I: Planning and Engineering

Abstract:

This paper reviews the attractiveness of high-speed rail in Canada. It summarizes the findings of studies on the subject by VIA Rail, Canada's national passenger rail corporation. VIA found that high-speed rail in the heavily traveled Quebec City-Windsor corridor is technically feasible, financially attractive and could deliver substantial benefits to travelers and the rest of society. It would increase safety, reduce pollution, reduce congestion on the roads and at airports, and create economic development.
