Abstract:

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is proposing to provide redundancy for the Hultman Aqueduct which transports water over a distance of roughly 27 km. (16.9 mi.) into the city of Boston. Providing service reliability for this aqueduct was possible either through rehabilitation of existing infrastructure or through new construction on a new alignment. This comparison demonstrates the considerable impacts that can be associated with rehabilitation work and the difficulty in adapting existing facilities to new system requirements.
