Abstract:

The development of Bridge Management Systems, and Pontis in particular, requires states to change many of their traditional inspection and record-keeping procedures. If these are changed, states can expect an improved bridge network without additional expense. At the same time, the Federal government must specify guidelines so that the life cycle perspective is maintained in all future phases of bridge, and eventually transportation, management systems.
