Abstract:

This study is an extension of an earlier work on creating a 3-D model from 2-D drawings. The objective of this current work is to explore the issues involved in creating a prototype knowledge-based system (AutoModeler) that can: interpret architectural plan drawings; automatically construct a 3-D model of a building based on the results interpreted from the 2-D plan drawings and the user's provided information about the height; and generate other 2-D drawings, such as sections, elevations and perspectives from the 3-D model. These knowledge modules are employed for 2-D drawing interpretation and 3-D model construction. The AutoModeler has demonstrated successfully for automatically constructing a 3-D model based on the interpretations of simplified architectural plan drawings. In addition, the system is capable of generating drawings such as sections and elevations from the resulting 3-D model.
