Abstract:

This paper applies the lower- and the Upper- bound theorems of the plasticity theory to arch dams, according to different forms of discretization for dam, two methods, namely the structural plastic limit analysis method and the three-dimensional (3-D) finite element plastic limit analysis method are presented and their mathematical models on linear programming (LP) and non-linear programming (NLP) are derived respectively. Calculations of engineering examples show that the two plastic limit analysis methods are suited to calculate the limit bearing capacity (overloading factor or strength reserve coefficient) and the collapse mechanism of arch dam.
