Abstract:

A heavy rain caused a famous Chinese ancient wooden structure to suffer serious base subsidence. In order to deal with the base subsidence of the valuable structure, a joggle model and a nonlinear method were developed to describe the behavior of joggle joints, which were widely used in the construction. The method was adapted into a 3-dimensional FEM structural analysis program. Various joint models were attempted and the numerical results were compared with the observed results. It is shown that the method developed in this paper is effective in determining the behavior of joggle joints.
