Abstract:

Pavement distress diagnosis requires a significant amount of engineering judgement which is difficult, if not impossible, to be quantified. This is an excellent domain for the development of an expert systems. PDS (Pavement Diagnosis System) is developed particularly for flexible pavements in Taiwan. The knowledge base contains heuristic rules extracted from the interviews with five senior pavement engineers. Three of the domain exports work in the southern part of Taiwan, while the other two devote their career in the northern part of the island. Almost all the highway pavements in Taiwan are of the flexible type. The pavement structures suffer from high humidity and temperature. In recent years, the pavement problems are aggravated by severe overloading. The development of PDS is not just an outcome of innovative research. It is more like a product to meet the practical demand.
