Abstract:

In this paper, the coupling of boundary element and finite element methods and its application to analyze slab on girder bridges are studied. The boundary element method (BEM) is employed to model the bridge deck while the finite element method (FEM) is used to model the girders. The slab is connected with the girders at a number of interface nodes and the necessary compatibility requirements along the interface boundaries are fully satisfied. Two numerical examples are presented which clearly demonstrate the validity of the combined method (BEM-FEM). The results obtained from the combined method are in good agreement with the finite strip solution (FSS).
