Abstract:

Cellular concrete mat (CCM) systems have been installed as overtopping protection on three small embankment dams along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Based on field tests by others and on the contract costs for the Parkway dams, CCM systems appear to offer a cost effective way of protecting existing earth embankments during overtopping floods. Several design considerations are reviewed in light of the construction experiences at the Parkway dams.
