Abstract:

A Load & Resistant Factor Design Specification for wood buildings is being completed. The Specification contains several revisions from the traditional 'repetitive member' factor used for wood structures. This paper outlines the background of the traditional 15% stress increase for repetitive member systems. It examines several research examples that provide evidence that this increase is extremely conservative for common wood structural assemblies. On the other hand, the paper also presents several types of common applications of wood products in which the usual concepts (of systems increasing capacity) might not apply. The paper concludes by presenting the format recommended by the industry review groups, and currently being balloted by a consensus standards committee.
