Abstract:

The theories and assumptions behind the base isolation technology are briefly described. As an illustration of its application, the base isolation of an existing 12-story hospital in Long Beach, California is discussed. Using inelastic dynamic time history analysis, comparisons are made between the potential seismic performance of the existing fixed base structure and that of the isolated retrofit.
