Abstract:

Simulation of individual vehicles interacting within a traffic facility offers traffic operations data of detail and form uniquely suited to evaluate untried concepts or confirm yet-to-be built designs. Advancing computing technology supports the increased use of simulation. In the Karachi mass transit study (KMTS), the World Bank asked for a study of alternatives to a recommended transitway form, a busway designed for conversion to light rail. The alternatives evaluated were an elevated light rail route, and a 'Brazil-type' busway with signalized intersections.
