Abstract:

The Highway Emulator (THE) Model is a microcomputer based travel demand forecasting program maintained by the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS). In addition to the traditional modeling steps, it includes a feature that allows trip tables to be estimated from existing traffic counts. CTPS has validated the trip tables estimated by THE Model with observed trip tables for two expressways in Massachusetts. A strong correlation was found between the estimated and observed tables for each expressway. The purpose of this paper is to document this validation and also the application of the process in a variety of studies.
