Abstract:

The Fish-Ecca Tunnel is situated in the Eastern Cape and forms part of the Lower Fish Irrigation Scheme. About 25% of the 5032 m tunnel had to be lined with shotcrete. Between February and April 1989, extensive shotcrete tests had been conducted by Blue Circle Cement (Pty) Ltd in cooperation with the Department of Water Affairs. The tests included laboratory optimisation of shotcrete accelerators, calibration of in-situ testing equipment as well as field evaluation of shotcrete based on different cementitious binders (ordinary portland cement, fly ash and silica fume), accelerators, and steel-fibre. Placing and in-situ strength development were monitored. The determination of compressive, tensile splitting, and flexural strength was undertaken on cores and beams extracted from shotcrete panels.
