Abstract:

This paper presents the result of an experimental observation of cnoidal waves and the nonlinear wave loads on a fixed barge in a 2-dimensional wave tank. The Ursell numbers of the waves fall in the range of 0.5 to 70. The measured waves were analyzed and the properties were compared with those of the theoretical cnoidal waves. The first harmonic force coefficients were compared with the sinusoidal wave diffraction theory. The ratios of the nth harmonic terms with their respective resultants were plotted against the Ursell number. It was found that the degree of nonlinearity of the horizontal force is about the same as that of the cnoidal waves.
