Abstract:

Two-dimensional processes of soil evaporation and moisture extraction by plant roots (horizontal and vertical) were incorporated into a saturated/unsaturated finite element model (UNSAT2) to predict two dimensional soil moisture profiles under a corn crop. Soil evaporation algorithms included microadvection of unused evaporative energy from dry soil areas toward areas of moist soil surfaces and diffusive evaporation from subsurface nodes.
