On the Fatigue Loading for Local Components

Abstract:

Fatigue provisions in the North American Codes for design of highway bridges may not be applicable to the design of local components which are subjected to high axle overloads and dynamic amplifications. A methodology is given to develop appropriate fatigue loading based on site-specific data. Application of the methodology has been illustrated for a modular expansion joint using data obtained from field testing of the joint and subsequent stress range survey under normal traffic.
