Abstract:

External post-tensioning is used as a means of strengthening existing steel girder bridges. Since absolute safety of structures is impossible to attain due to uncertainty in load and resistance, a reliability-based approach is carried out on typical post-tensioned girders (elements) and superstructures (systems) in flexure. The study showed that post-tensioning can result in a considerable increase in the bridge reliability. The increase greatly depends on the area, stress and position of the post-tensioned bars.
