Part of: Engineering, Construction, and Operations in Space III

Abstract:

This paper proposes the use of explosive forming to form large, near net shape components for HLLV propellant tanks and structures in meeting this need. Combining with high strength to weight Aluminum-Lithium alloys, explosive forming may offer a significant potential cost saving solution to the affordability issue. The paper will examine briefly the principal mechanics of explosive metal working technology, issues associated with Aluminum-Lithium (AL-Li) alloys, manufacturing considerations, potential applications to launch vehicles manufacturing, and facilities requirements.
