by Leonhard E. Bernold, North Carolina State Univ, Raleigh, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Engineering, Construction, and Operations in Space III

Abstract:

This paper will discuss the results of preliminary research on a cable-based transportation system for the moon. The paper will address the principles of cableway design and will present a prototype computer-controlled, flexible tramway. The presented system could: (a) serve as a robotic cargo handler; (b) provide automated highspeed transportation between landing zone and habitats; (c) be used as an excavator and regolith supply system; (d) support any type of construction activities; and (e) operate and maintain various facilities.
