Abstract:

This paper presents a pilot study of a computer simulation of direct shear test on sands using the Discrete Element Method. The numerical test setup is described first, which is followed by a set of simple tests on sands of uniform assemblies. For these tests, only a constant surface friction was given for each particle, the apparent friction angle envelope as defined by the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was found to be curved.
