Abstract:

The response statistics of a caster-mounted system with white noise excitation are estimated using the generalized equivalent linearization method. The displacement and velocity covariances are characterized by two limiting responses: from below by that of a block restrained by Coulomb friction, and from above by a frictionless system. The transient behavior is shown to initially be that of the Coulomb friction system, but the increasing displacement covariance results in the behavior switching to that of a frictionless system, leading to non-stationary response in both velocity and displacement.
