Abstract:

A new approach for modeling localized deformations is proposed. This approach uses an interface element to model the shear band. A successful capture of the kinematics of a failure mechanism requires that interface elements are aligned in the proper direction that is determined via diagnostic bifurcation analysis. Moreover, employing the interface element allows for possibility to introduce the intrinsic band width as the 'constitutive property' of the band. Consequently, the influence of the shear band width on the global load-displacement response of the structure (sample) can be assessed. Provided that experimental results are available a straightforward calibration procedure can be devised in order to determine the thickness of the shear band.
