Abstract:

The 21st biennial ASCE salary survey of the engineering profession conducted by the ASCE Committee on Employment Conditions during the first half of 1991 is presented. It consists of an in-depth analysis of salary and benefits data based on the different ASCE professional grades and six broad categories of employment: 1) Consulting firms; 2) construction firms; 3) design/construction firms; 4) industry, railroads, and utilities; 5) state departments and agencies; and 6) municipalities and counties. Some of the various analyses offered in the survey cover such topics as: 1) Costs of fringe benefits by employment categories and trends in this area; 2) regional comparisons of median salaries by professional grades; 3) mean and median salaries for selected metropolitan areas; 4) average salaries by employment categories; and 5) percentage change in mean entrance and average salaries. This survey provides a comprehensive look at the topic of compensation for services within the engineering profession.
