Abstract:

Modern road transport systems rely on information from sensors to operate safely and efficiently. The sensors are typically used to provide vehicle counting, occupancy, speed measurement and classification information. The optical sensors discusses in this paper offer several advantages, including well defined detection areas, fast response time and true presence capability. Two technologies have been developed based on passive and active infrared. Applications include both vehicle and pedestrian detection.
