Design for IVHS Safety: Technology Assessment

by Wei-Bin Zhang, Univ of California at Berkeley, Richmond, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Applications of Advanced Technologies in Transportation Engineering

Abstract:

The development of an Intelligent Vehicle/Highway System (IVHS) will require methodologies for predicting and controlling system safety. In principle, these methodologies should include variuos safety control technologies which assure that both the frequency and magnitude of inadvertent events inherent in the system (or system hazards) are acceptable. This paper assessses hazard reduction techniques including: fault monitoring techniques; reliability techniques; safety techniques; and 'life-saving' techniques.
