Abstract:

Advanced technologies for traffic detection for freeway control systems are described. mm-wave radar detectors are used with a correlation of vehicle reflexion patterns to acquire section related traffic variables like density and travel time. With density as crucial parameter control strategies can be designed which are appropriate especially for heavy traffic. Traffic is regulated within line control and network control systems. Line control uses traffic dependent speed limit, lane attachment, passing prohibition and general warning. Network control influences traffic by alternative route guidances. The optimization of the control systems is done by an expert system.
