Abstract:

Traffic monitoring and control systems require reliable realtime data on traffic flow for an efficient performance. A new 'class' of data, the so-called section-related data such as journey speed and traffic density can be obtained automatically by application of pattern recognition principles and correlation methods to traffic engineering. The so-called MAVE-system incorporates this approach: it analyses traffic condition on the basis of section-related and local data, delivers an 'electronic road map' for authorities and drivers and derives strategies for traffic control.
