Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Lifeline Earthquake Engineering

Abstract:

The main focus of this paper is to demonstrate the practicality of the recently developed methodology for earthquake loss estimation for lifelines as well as to demonstrate the usefulness of the results obtained in planning for loss reduction. The methodology is first summarized and then its use is demonstrated through an application to an existing hypothetical water distribution system. In this application the loss estimates are obtained first and the results are then utilized to develop an upgrading plan for loss reduction. The efficiency of the upgrading plan is then checked using the loss estimation method for the upgraded system. Only the direct dollar losses due to damage to the components of lifelines are accounted for. The indirect dollar losses due to partial or full loss of functionality of lifelines will be accounted for in future papers.
