Abstract:

Eight case studies involving construction accidents caused by failure of temporary structures are presented. These studies illustrate the oftentimes unintended consequence of utilizing temporary structures, as well as the lessons which can be learned from their failure. The cases discussed involve: a moveable stop sign; highway plates; sewer flume; a cooling tower scaffold collapse; an elevated road scaffold; a coffer dam; a Bailey bridge; a parkway arch bridge.
