Abstract:

For design projects in the groundwater area, a step-drawdown test is commonly used to investigate the properties of the well-aquifer systems. Higher well and formation losses are usually linked to overdraft discharge, unsafe yield, land subsidence, environmental degradation, and poor performance of the system under investigation. For optimum performance of the given well-aquifer system, the head loss plays a crucial role in the selection of the pumping equipment and other design features pertaining to the system. A head loss equation representing a relationship between the well drawdown and a sixth-degree polynomial of the discharge is presented as a possible solution for the efficient design of the equipment and selection of other parameters for the well-aquifer system. The methodology provides a tool in the form of head loss as a controlling point to adjust the discharge to safe yield limits and to minimize the effects of various loss parameters by changing different design factors. The proposed technique is applicable to well systems installed either in confined or unconfined aquifers.
