Abstract:

A mathematical model is presented for conjunctive management of connected surface and groundwater systems. The groundwater module is based on the linear, two-dimensional, horizontal flow equations under equilibrium conditions in a heterogeneous and anisotropic medium. The surface water component includes streams and lakes. Both types of elements are represented by the hydrological storage equations. Surface and groundwater components are coupled through continuity of mass and pressure heads. The solution is obtained for a set of hydraulic and management constraints by using a standard linear programming package.
