Abstract:

Definitive proof of the phenomenon of concurrent biological nitrification-denitrification in activated sludge is presented. The mechanism appears to be an inhibition of oxygen respiration in the presence of nitrite. Due to the inhibition the biomass uses NO_x as an electron acceptor even in the presence of high D.O.
