Abstract:

On April 6, 1990, the federal and Quebec governments signed an historic agreement for the establishment of a marine park at the confluence of the Saguenay fjord and the Saint Lawrence River. The prime objective of the Saguenay Marine Park is to protect and conserve the exceptional wildlife of this marine region for present and future generations. The establishment of this marine park is only one component of an overall strategy designed to promote a wise use of marine resources. The establishment of a park as well as the understanding and appreciation of marine environment will then encourage and serve as a springboard for other initiatives taken as part of a global conservation effort.
