Abstract:

The status of scientific research pertaining to the marine environmental aspects of the discharge of sewage effluent into Halifax Harbour, Canada is reviewed. The background to the local sewage disposal issue is outlined. Details are provided of the research that has been undertaken and is currently underway to address this issue and for other purposes, the results to date, the implications of the research for harbour users and others, and the research requirements that remain outstanding. Finally, the mechanisms that utilize the results of research in making recommendations, providing advice, etc., are discussed.
