Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '91

Abstract:

This paper addresses commercial, recreational uses and economic benefits of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary to the local economies of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. These are the preliminary results of a continuing study regarding changes in usage patterns of the sanctuary area before and after designation, as well as factors that influence current use. Although specific issues vary among sanctuaries, the principles discussed here and in the continuing study may apply to other national marine sanctuaries.
