Abstract:

The condition of the beaches of Santa Monica Bay are the result of natural events and man's intervention in coastal processes. This paper reviews events which have shaped these beaches. It summarizes major storms, floods, and construction and maintenance programs. Since the 1930's, beach profiles have been measured repeatedly. The value of this data base to coastal planners is discussed. Preliminary results from three recent surveys are presented.
